Chennai: New desalination plant to be set up by 2023; nine lakh city residents to be benefitted

A new desalination plant is in progress and will be set up by April 2023 at Nemmeli. The second desalination plant will provide a drinking water supply to around nine lakh residents of Chennai. The new plant, built at a cost of Rs 1,259.38 crore, has the capacity to desalinate 150 million liters per day (MLD).

The residents of Ullagaram Puzhudhivakkam, Velachery, Madipakkam, Sholinganallur, Alandur, IT Corridor, St Thomas Mount, and Pallavaram will be supplied with water once the plant is set up. On Tuesday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin inspected the ongoing work of the plant.

Stalin directed the officials to complete the ongoing work by April 2023 and inspected the intake sump, dissolved air flotation, product water tank, reserve osmosis process, ultra-filter, clarified water tank, and other work. The Metro water officials have already begun laying pipelines from the new plant to the Pallavaram area to supply the desalinated water.
